Ugh...Not Again

The Midwest winter is in full swing and as ready as we think we are for it; we never really are. You’re lethargic, your face feels the pulsing of your heart, there’s a leak coming from your nose – the inevitable has come; winter allergies. And nothing suffers more than your breathing passages.

Several things attribute to your winter allergies ramping up in the winter and you’ll be surprised to know that most come from within the walls of your own home.

Where Are They Coming From?

"When people think of allergies they typically think of pollen, weeds and other outdoor variables," says Matt Peters, ADVENT's resident FNP and Allergy Services Lead. "Our sensitivity to dust and pet dander is heightened in the winter because of the increased time we spend indoors. So spending more time in this environment causes our allergies to kick in."

Because the weather is frigid, we're more apt to stay indoors and ride out the long winter. When you put yourself in this situation – which we don’t blame you for – you become susceptible to things caused by poor ventilation like dust buildup, mold, and animal dander.

A Few Precautions

To combat things that cause winter allergies here are some things to consider:

  • Keep moisture levels moderate (recommended 50% to reduce the amount of mold and bugs in the house).
  • Increase the amount of maintenance on pipes and faucets.
  • TAKE YOUR VITAMINS.
  • Bathe your pets more frequently – once a week if possible.

The ADVENT Effect

Unfortunately, if you’ve been suffering from things like postnasal drip, excessive snoring, sleep apnea, or swollen turbinates, your allergies are going to take an even harder hit. Add excessive mucus, inflamed nasal passages, and wheezing to the equation and you're smack dab in the middle of a perfect storm of sickness. Instead of the discomfort, visit with an ADVENT provider and determine the best course of action to alleviate the intensity of your annual snotfest. Aren't you the least bit curious about what it's like to have 20/20 breathing?

Being full of mucus and having to go to your local drug store every day for over-the-counter medications is a daunting task. It's a heck of a lot worse than a visit to ADVENT where you'll begin the journey back to optimal breathing. Get ahead of the curve with your allergies and make sure you're ready to smell the spring flowers with the help of our simple in-office solutions.

Take the first step to improving your life.
