Nice to Meet You

Hi, I’m Dr. Michael Kortbus, a sinus and sleep surgeon at ADVENT. I’m originally from New York, where I spent most of my life and career. After earning my medical degree in Boston and completing my residency at NYU, I practiced as an otolaryngologist in New York’s Hudson Valley for nearly two decades. Joining ADVENT has been a wonderful opportunity to connect with patients in the Midwest and be part of a team dedicated to helping people live better through our innovative in-office Breathing Triangle solutions.

My path to becoming an ENT surgeon started early. As a child, I struggled with allergies, a broken nose (thanks to some rough wrestling with my older brother) and ringing in my ears. These experiences brought me face-to-face with ENT specialists who sparked my interest in this field. My mother, a nurse, always emphasized compassionate care, while my father, an engineer, encouraged problem-solving. That combination shaped how I approach patient care today—thoughtful, personalized, and focused on finding lasting solutions.

One of the things I love most about this field is that we get to make a real difference in patients’ lives, often with just a few visits or a simple procedure. There’s nothing more rewarding than seeing someone’s face light up when they realize they can finally breathe freely or sleep soundly.

Over the years, I’ve been privileged to be part of advancements in ENT care, including early training in innovative procedures like balloon sinuplasty. It’s incredibly fulfilling to now offer these minimally invasive, in-office solutions at ADVENT, helping patients find relief without the need for anesthesia or a hospital stay.

All the staff were knowledgeable and kind. Any potential costs to me where up front and detailed. Proceeded with treatment and resolved my breathing issues after a short recovery. Very happy with the results. Sleep better, walk not getting winded and better quality of life in general.

It's nice to have an open airway! You don't know how bad it is until after the procedure is done. Highly recommend.

One of the most knowledgeable, helpful and empathic healthcare professionals that I’ve met in years. She was clear giving directions and also in stating what may be the next steps to take, I was very pleased with her professional manner and her human caring
