In-office snoreplasty or Uvulopalatopharynoplasty (also known as UP3 or UPPP) is a procedure done in office to improve obstructive sleep apnea.
As we age or gain weight, our tissue and muscles often begin to sag and lose some of their rigidity and strength. When this occurs, breathing can cause weakened tissue in the soft palate to vibrate and produce the obnoxious noise known as snoring. In some cases, breathing can also cause the tissue in the soft palate to collapse and obstruct the upper airway, producing OSA.
Snoreplasty at ADVENT
Conveniently performed within ADVENT offices to treat snoring and sleep apnea.
The procedure is performed in an outpatient setting using a topical anesthesia. After numbing the uvula and palate with a topical and local anesthetic, a hardening agent (sclerosing agent) is injected directly into the soft palate just above the uvula. The hardening agent causes the tissue to form scar tissue. When the scar tissue forms the palate becomes stiffer, reducing fluttering of the soft palate.
A minimally invasive technique is then used to remove part of the uvula. Typically at least 1-2 injection treatments are required to achieve the best results. If a second injection is needed, it is typically scheduled 6-8 weeks apart.
Following your In Office UP3 treatment you will have some swelling, bruising and tenderness at the injection and excision sites. A sore throat is expected for the first 3-5 days, but can last up to 2 weeks. Over the counter pain relievers and throat lozenges/sprays will be recommended after the treatment. You may have the feeling like something is stuck in the back of your throat or near the roof of your mouth, this is very normal and typically subsides in the first couple of days. Most patients can return to work 24-48 hours after their treatment.
“Before my procedure, I had a lot of headaches on a regular basis – I was missing work, not able to participate in my kids lives or family social life and those have gone away. It’s been very life-changing as I got my life back and I am able to fully engage and enjoy the things we like to do as a family.”
This treatment is available at Wauwatosa, Mequon and Oconomowoc ADVENT locations.
