Kayla’s Story

Kayla wasn't sleeping throughout the night and was suffering from headaches and sinus infections. Here's her story on how she got to the root of her symptoms:

“My symptoms started back in high school, so about seven years ago. I was getting constant headaches, reoccurring sinus infections, a lot of sinus pressure, headaches. I wasn't sleeping through the night, which I thought it was just my back. I would go to the doctor; they would get me antibiotics and they would send in automatic refills because they knew I was getting so many sinus infections. Instead of getting to the root of the problem, my primary care provider never suggested to go to an ENT or get it looked at even farther. I just thought that my symptoms were normal and just to treat it with whatever the doctor was giving me at the time.

I started working at Advent in 2015. I started working at the front desk and we had a seminar that I had to attend. When I was listening to the seminar, I realized that a lot of the symptoms that our patients were dealing with, I was also dealing with and I didn't realize it at the time. As I was listening, I came to the realization that I need to be a patient at ADVENT and I actually need to get my symptoms looked at further and I needed to get to the root of what was actually causing my symptoms.

After my surgery, I actually started sleeping throughout the night and I had no idea that it was actually my sinuses that were causing me to wake up throughout the whole night. It wasn't my bed; it wasn't my back or just me waking up, it was actually me not being able to breathe correctly and my body was waking me up so I could breathe better.

I don't get the constant headaches and the constant sinus pressure. I'm not taking all the over-the-counter medications anymore, so I feel just so much better. Going throughout the day, I don't feel as tired as I used to. Now that I've experienced sinus surgery, when I hear patients call in and when I talk to patients about our journey here, I feel like I relate so much to what they're going through because I went through it as well, so I know how frustrating and how long of a cycle it could be before you actually get treated.”
